I just finished this last night, and it is interesting to say the least. I do want to warn anyone that has suffered any kind of abuse, there might be some triggers in here. This is a dystopian novel that takes place after a war has wiped out almost everybody, or so Kate believes. When it comes to Kate's village think Amazons with male prisoners. Men are kept locked up to prevent more war, and are "stock".

On a girl's 16 birthday she is assigned her "duty" that will help the village. The girl's duty is determined by the stars when she is born. They are not asked what they want, they are told what they are going to do. Kate has been assigned the job of Breeder, and is expected to have children. She wants none of it, and does her best to fight her fate. This gets her punched and disciplined in a few different ways. She also stands up for what she believes in, and this gets her in trouble as well.

Then she is sent to the pit and meets Ian, the boy who is supposed to be her "mate". When he tells her stories about his village she at first thinks he's crazy because everyone in the village is told they are the only people left in the world. When she finds out the truth however things really get bad.

Kate must make a choice: Ian or the village? Each path has dangerous consequences, and with Ian's life and hers hanging in the balance she must decide if she will stay and try to change the village or run with Ian and face the unknown. Mona, the village leader, has every intention of beating Kate into submission and getting what she wants from her, and even Kate doesn't know the whole truth about Mona's plans.

I gave it five stars because honestly, I was glued to this book. I had to know how far Kate was willing to go. How much punishment could she take. What was her breaking point? There are worse things than death and Kate just might find out what those things are. This is the first book of three, and I've already picked up book 2. While Kate's duty is being a Breeder there is no adult content. There is mention of having children but no details, but because of the violence I would say at least 13+ on age.

You can find it on amazon at the following link and it is free in KU:
