New Orleans is a city known for its paranormal history—and it’s the place Emma Rose Crane, AKA Mattie Hathaway, has come home to.

This is a chance for her to start over. In New Orleans, she's welcome, and her abilities to see ghosts isn't so freaky.

But the whole thing would be a lot easier if she weren’t faced with a family she barely knows and starting college, all while dealing with the loss of someone she loved.

Can she really escape her past and be semi-normal? Even with her sister Mary and best friend Eric by her side, it's going to be a wild ride once she agrees to help Mary's new friends investigate a "haunted" house.

The house’s new occupants are terrified, and the ghost seems to be attacking their little girl, leaving everyone desperate for answers. Emma isn’t sure what to think when she discovers Dr. Lawrence Olivet was also invited to investigate.

Will her gifts be enough to save the family that is currently being stalked in their own home? And when some of her own family’s long-kept secrets come to light, will her fresh start be over before it even begins?

My Review
⭐⭐⭐⭐

The main character from this book is the same as the one from the book series The Ghost Files. She has just changed her name since finding her birth father and leaving foster care. Mattie/Emma runs into some seriously scary ghosts that may keep you up at night, and is what is called a living reaper. She is supposed to help confused ghosts cross over. However, some ghosts are angry at what happened to them and want to hurt people. She is still learning how to use her powers, and this causes a bad situation to get worse when she is trying to help a family that has a soul eater attacking their baby girl. Mattie is also recovering from some things that happened to her at the end of the ghost files series, so isn't at 100 percent. I give her props though she's a tough cookie and keeps on going.

I had not read the ghost files series, so I felt a little left out on some of the connections between the characters. I found when I read the first couple of chapters, that the characters have a long history, so I stopped and read The Ghost Files book 1 really quick, so I could better understand what was going on and felt a much better connection to the characters after that. I feel like a sprinkle of background here and there may have helped this one out since there is so much history there. I highly recommend at least reading book one of The Ghost Files before reading this book. Just be warned that it may contain some triggers for someone who has been abused.

I gave this book four stars due to the lack of solid connection to the characters without reading The Ghost Files. Even after reading book 1 there is still a lot left out, and that left me a little frustrated. Mattie has nicknames for some of the people in her life that this book just doesn’t explain or give you a reference for. Is he a friend? Ex-boyfriend? What the heck is he to her? That's what had me stopping to read the other book first. There is no adult content, and I would recommend 15+ as a good age range for this book but a little higher on the age for The Ghost Files.

I am interested in finding out what happens next. Who knew ghosts could be so dangerous? Plus, a brother who might try to kill you? Yeah, she's got some interesting family problems.

About the Author

So who am I?

Well, I’m the crazy girl with an imagination that never shuts up. I LOVE scary movies. My friends laugh at me when I scare myself watching them and tell me to stop watching them, but who doesn’t love to get scared? I grew up in a small town nestled in the southern mountains of West Virginia where I spent days roaming around in the woods, climbing trees, and causing general mayhem. Nights I would stay up reading Nancy Drew by flashlight under the covers until my parents yelled at me to go to sleep.

Now, I live in a small town in West Virginia where I entertain my niece and nephew and watch the cats get teased by the birds and laugh myself silly when they swoop down and then dive back up just out of reach. The cats start yelling something fierce…lol.

I love books, I love writing books, and I love entertaining people with my silly stories.
