When you're working with the Roman god of chaos, things can always get worse.

Bacchae, the supernatural creatures that spawned vampire lore, are real. For the last several thousand years, they’ve kept to the shadows. UNTIL NOW.

When the worst and most powerful of the Bacchae murders someone she loves, graduate student Serafina Finch, now aided by the ancient god Bacchus, sets out on a journey in search of new allies. They must act quickly before Danae, the Bacchae witch claiming to be Queen, figures out a way to restore the Bacchae to their full powers.

Sera is hellbent on killing Danae before she devastates the mortal world, and it becomes a race against time when the queen reveals her own dark alliances. Sera thinks things can’t get any worse, but when you're working with the Roman god of chaos, things can always get worse.

“Bacchus created us in his image—chaos. And chaos is what we will give them.”

HER MAJESTY'S FURY is the second book in the Immortal Relics series, a New Adult Urban Fantasy adventure. Fans of Deborah Harkness, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and Roman mythology will love this blend of magic, mayhem, and wry humor.

Welcome to JB’s Bookworms with Brandy Mulder

Tell us about your newest book.
Her Majesty’s Fury is the second installment in the Immortal Relics urban fantasy series. Readers will follow Serafina to different parts of the world as she attempts to convince ancient gods to join the battle against Danae, the vampire (Bacchae) witch proclaiming herself queen. This book was so much fun to research and write, but also required a lot more work in the editing phase as I haven’t had the luxury of traveling to the places I described. Thank you to all the YouTubers and travel bloggers out there in the world!

Writing isn’t easy. What was the most difficult thing you dealt with when writing your newest book?
Other than the research, time was a big issue this go round. Both of my kids (now aged 3.5 and 2) struggled with sleep and BOTH gave up naps about a month before publication - crunch time! As a stay-at-home mom, their sleep time is my work time, so I had to change some of my expectations and plans for launch.

Tell us a little bit about your writing career.
My parents have always said I could read before I spoke, and I started writing soon after that. Whether or not that’s true is anyone’s guess, but my love for reading and writing started early. I had always planned to be an author, but it took me until my mid-30s to really make it a priority. I let life and doubt get in the way until now.

They say Hind-sight is 20/20. If you could give advice to the writer you were the first time you sat down to write, what would it be?
Don’t stop.

What was your most difficult scene to write?
Battles are tough to write. You don’t want to give a play by play, but you also need to paint a detailed enough scene for your readers to follow, while also building tension. Whew!

Are themes a big part of your stories, or not so much?
I don’t necessarily think of themes in the beginning, but I’m sure they pop up as I’m writing.

What are you working on now?
Book 3, Descent to Hel. And no, that’s not a typo. Wink wink.

Is there a release date planned?
My goal is to publish book 3 by May or June of 2020.

Who is your favorite character from your own stories, and why?
I love love love writing Nora. She’s fierce and spunky and gets to say all the things I wish I could say.

Most writers were readers as children. What was your favorite book in grade school?
I can’t remember early on, but I adored R.L. Stine’s Goosebumps. I recently found out that my dad donated my collection, and I just about died. It’s on me though. I’m 35, and I still had boxes of books in his garage. Whoops.

What are your plans for future projects?
I have more ideas for the Immortal Relics series, but after book 3, I’m going to dive into another series I’ve been itching to write. It’s Hunger Games meets Divergent meets The 100 meets The Walking Dead.

Is there anything you would like to add before we finish?
If you like a book or author, please leave a review! We all thank you.

Good luck with your newest release, and thank you for being with us today.

EXCERPT

Someone must have tied an anvil around Sera’s heart and dropped it into the deepest part of the deepest ocean. Or was it tossed into a fast-flowing river? Was her heart stopping or beating too fast? She couldn’t tell, but either way, she was drowning.

A bright red glow filled her mind, encasing her entire being in love, driving out the pain. Her heart, which had been beating its way out of her chest, slowed to its usual rhythm, her breath returning to normal.

Sera opened her eyes to find Nora’s face directly in front of her, her friend’s hands gripping Sera’s shoulders and shaking her lightly.

“Jesus, girl!” Nora breathed a sigh of relief.

“I’m sorry I just needed a moment.”

“A moment?” Dropping her arms, Nora sat back on her heels from her kneeling position in front of Sera’s chair. “It’s been like five minutes. Okay, maybe just one, but you weren’t responding. At all.”

Sera rubbed her face with her hands, trying to clear her thoughts. “Did Theo say anything else? Where? How?”

“Just that he’d swing by before classes tomorrow to fill us in and prepare us,” Nora said.

“Prepare us?” She tensed. She already knew how they were killed. Maybe he was going to update the others, rightly assuming she hadn’t told them all the details yet. And probably couldn’t. Not yet, anyway. But where were they found? Did anything else happen to them? She swallowed the bile rising in her throat.

“That’s all he said.”

“You girls need to get some rest. Eleanor, you’re welcome to stay here as long as you’d like,” Renee said.

Nora’s curls bounced as she got to her feet. “You know I appreciate the offer, but there’s nothing like sleeping in my own bed again after a few nights away. I’ll be back around seven.”

As Nora leaned down to hug her, Sera breathed in her familiar oatmeal scent, courtesy of her ridiculously expensive shower gel. She would definitely sacrifice herself before letting the Bacchae get their hands on her best friend. Not even Bacchus could stop her wrath if they tried.

A feeling of mirth drifted through her mind.

Once Nora left, Sera headed upstairs to the guest room that had become her new home. The room was just large enough to hold a full-sized bed and side table adorned with a vase holding a few white snowdrops. Once she turned off the light, the room would be enveloped in complete darkness due to the lack of a window. She welcomed the dark and sleep right about now, if only to cease her chaotic thoughts.

She knew Renee didn’t mind her staying there, but Sera hoped it was only temporary like she kept saying it was. Someday, she’d like her life to return to normal. Whatever her new normal would be, anyway.

But first, she had a Bacchae witch to take down.

About the Author:

Stephanie Mirro's lifelong love of ancient mythology led to majoring in the Classics in college, which wasn't quite as much fun as writing her own mythology stories as she did as a child. But that education, combined with an overactive imagination and being an avid fantasy reader, resulted in a writing career.
Starting her days with coffee and ending them with wine means Stephanie can usually be found juggling household chores, keeping the kids alive, and trying to write, edit, publish, and market the stories that haunt her dreams.

Born and raised in Southern Arizona, Stephanie now resides in Northern Virginia with her husband, two kids, and two furbabies. This thing called “seasons” is still magical.
