An Interview with Urban Fantasy Author Scott Carruba

An Interview with Author
Scott Carruba

Bio

Born in Houston, Texas into the temporary care of a bevy of nuns before being delivered to his adopted parents, Scott discovered creative writing at a very young age when asked to write a newspaper from another planet. This exercise awakened a seemingly endless drive, and now, many short stories, poems, plays, and novels (both finished and unfinished) later, his first book, "Dance of the Butterfly", has been published.

The seeds for this tale began with dreams, as many often do, before being fine-tuned with a whimsical notion and the very serious input of a dear friend. Before long, the story took on a life of its own and has now become the first book in a planned series.

Having lived his whole life in the same state, Scott attended the University of Texas at Austin, achieving a degree in philosophy before returning to the Houston area to be closer to family and friends. During this time, he wrote more and even branched out into directing and performance art, though creative writing remains his love.

Genre: Urban Fantasy

Tell us a little bit about why you write in your chosen genre, and if you have books in other genres as well.

Urban Fantasy is one of my favorite genres for settings.  I enjoy writing within contemporary times.  As this story came to me, it was also set in our time and world, so that is how I proceeded.  I don’t have any books in other genres.

Tell us about your first book.

Dance of the Butterfly is something of a supernatural thriller/mystery.  It comes about as a slow burn, picking at the reader’s awareness in the guise of a crime thriller, but there is much more hidden within.  I was able to explore many things with this book, but first and foremost, I wanted to present a supernatural story within a realistic context so as to give the paranormal aspects that much more punch.

Was it a series?

Yes, it is the first book in a series.  Two are published and the third is on its way.

What is your most current book?

I am currently working on the third and final book in my Butterfly series.

New books are so exciting. Can we expect anything new from you soon?

Oh, yes.  In addition to the book mentioned above, I am also working on another series.  I am not sure when this will be published, though, as getting the third book in my current series finished is ahead in the queue.

Do you have stories planned or that you’ve been working on for the future?

Yes.  I have at least four other book in the works.

Some stories have strong themes. How important are themes in your writing? Is your theme based on the story, or are your stories birthed from a theme/or themes?

In most cases it is a combination, but the story takes precedence.  Then within that framework, I am able to examine many themes.

What other stories have you written?

I have written other (unpublished) novels and short stories.  The only other published one I currently have is a short story in the OMP anthology Maximus Shock.  I have another short story slated to be published in a different anthology soon.  Both are horror stories.

I love to bounce around websites because I’ve found I can learn so much about an Author there. Do you have a website, or other place where you showcase your work?

I do.  https://scottcarruba.com/

So many Authors are artist’s by nature. Do you have any other artwork, or hobbies you do on a consistent basis?

Yes.  I enjoy dabbling in music.  I play guitar and keyboards and write songs.

What were your passions growing up?

Creativity has always been a passion of mine. I used to draw a great deal, and I have been a creative writer since in grade school.  This drive has manifested itself in many ways, and I feel it is a core force in my life.

Thank you for joining me today. I’m looking forward to seeing the books you’ll be showcasing in the future.

Thank you.
