An Interview with Krysten Hager

Tell us a little bit about why you write in your chosen genre, and if you have books in other genres as well.

I write YA and middle grade because I used to turn to books when I was having a difficult day at school dealing with friends or feeling like I didn’t fit in. I wanted to create characters that were a bit like me and wore their heart on her sleeve, dealt with insecurities and went out trying to find her tribe—where she fit in versus where she wanted to fit in. You can see this in Landry (the Landry’s True Colors Series), Hadley (Star Series), and Emme (Dating the It Guy) who all have those traits. I also wanted to add humor to the books because I always loved books that could make me smile.

Tell us about your first book.
My first book was actually an upper middle grade book called, True Colors, about a fourteen year old named Landry who got dragged along on a modeling tryout and then was unfriended after she advanced and her friends didn’t. The whole book was about finding your tribe.
Was it a series?
Yes, it was the first book in the Landry’s True Colors Series which follows the life of Landry Albright.

What is your most current book?
My latest book is a YA novel called Dating the It Guy. It’s about a boho girl who starts dating a senator’s popular son and tries to navigate in his world.
Is it a series?
I wrote it as a standalone book, but I’ve gotten so much feedback from people wanting to know what’s next for Brendon and Emme that I am working on a sequel.

New books are so exciting. Can we expect anything new from you soon?
I have a YA book that is almost finished. I hope to send it out soon.

Do you have stories planned or that you’ve been working on for the future?
I have two YA books I’m working on and one’s almost finished. I am also working on a New Adult book.

Some stories have strong themes. How important are themes in your writing? Is your theme based on the story, or are your stories birthed from a theme/or themes?

I start with the character first and determine who she is and what matters to her most. What is she all about and what is the world she’s living in. From there a theme is usually apparent.

What other stories have you written?
I have two other YA books: Next Door to a Star and Competing with the Star. I also have three upper middle grade books: True Colors, Best Friends…Forever?, and Landry in Like.

I love to bounce around websites because I’ve found I can learn so much about an Author there. Do you have a website, or other place where you showcase your work?

Yes! You can find me on: http://www.krystenlindsay.com/ I’m on Instagram every day, too.

So many Authors are artists by nature. Do you have any other artwork, or hobbies you do on a consistent basis?
I love decorating and I get very inspired by art, music and movies. I love going to art museums. My biggest hobby is reading and I like making scrapbooks.

What were your passions growing up?
I was writing even as a kid—making up stories and daydreaming constantly. I loved fashion and reading all the fashion magazine and shows on TV and putting together outfits.

Thank you for joining me today. This looks like a fun story. I can't wait to read it. I’ll be looking forward to seeing the books you’ll be showcasing in the future.
