Wow Ursula really gets the short end of the stick in this interesting backstory of how she came to be an evil witch. Of course Ursula isn't her true name. Daughter of Poseidon and sister of Triton, she was once a mermaid who only wanted to help her people. Her mom died when she was small, and her stepmom is out to get her. She does everything possible to make her dad happy and proud but nothing works.

Through a series of misunderstandings and political plots, the people she tries so hard to protect are turned against her. When forced to use a spell to try to help win the war with the humans before it was ready, a finally betrayal and a twist of her magic turns her into the Ursula we all know today. I felt really bad for her because she tried so hard, and loved her family.

This is really a story about the loss of love, friends, family, hopes, and dreams. Pushed to beyond despair Vanessa broke and Ursula was born. I gave it five stars because of the depth of the characters. This isn't a simple retelling or quick fairy tail filler. There is plot twists and a list of characters that brings the story to life. Everything from royalty to servants bring a complex relationship to the chain of events that bring Ursula to life. I also enjoyed the world building. The city, the customs, and the lore of the merfolk snared my imagination. There is violence, but no adult content. You can find it at the following link, and it is in KU.
