An empathic witch. A magical warrior. Joined by love, they battle a demon and an evil spirit.
Eva Grace Connelly is a witch and a beloved healer. Rodric McGuire, paranormal expert and descendent of faerie warriors, adores the flame-haired beauty. But their future is on hold as a family curse threatens her life.
Centuries ago, the Witches of New Mourne struck a dark bargain with the Woman in White. In exchange for peace, the malevolent spirit takes a Connelly witch from each generation.
Eva Grace is convinced she can heal the ghost's troubled spirit and end the reign of terror. But violence and family heartbreak challenge that resolve. As Samhain approaches, the Woman and her vile demon have control.
Is sacrifice the only road to peace? Can Eva Grace and Rodric uncover the secrets and lies at the heart of the curse?
Interview with Neely Powell
Welcome to JB’s Bookworms with Brandy Mulder.Tell us about your newest book.
HEALING MAGIC is the final book in The Witches of New Mourne trilogy. This completes the story arc about a family coven trying to break a centuries-old curse. The Woman in White demands the tribute of a young witch from every generation and tortures their town and their family with the aid of a vicious demon. Our heroine is Eva Grace, a witch who is also a healer. She’s convinced her empathic magic can heal the malevolent spirit’s tortured soul. Rodric McGuire, paranormal expert who has magic of his own, is there to support her quest and perhaps win her heart.
Writing isn’t easy. What was the most difficult thing you dealt with when writing your newest book?
Life. We both dealt with some tragedies over the past few years, and we had to prioritize our time. Finally, we were able to focus on completing this trilogy. It feels wonderful to be promoting the entire trilogy.
Tell us a little bit about your writing career.
We’re Leigh Neely and Jan Hamilton Powell, the writing team of Neely Powell. We met working at a rock ‘n roll radio station, discovered we’d both rather be writing fiction, and have been close friends ever since.
Our path to cowriting paranormal romance took some detours. Leigh’s resume chronicles a diverse career as a disk jockey, newspaper reporter, advertising copywriter, magazine writer and editor. Jan wrote 24 romance novels as Celeste Hamilton for Silhouette and Avon Books and then built a career in corporate communications and public relations.
Neely Powell became a successful team when we turned our attention to shifters, weres, witches, ghosts, fae, and all things supernatural. Our first novel was TRUE NATURE from The Wild Rose Press, followed by The Witches of New Mourne trilogy, AWAKENING MAGIC, HAUNTING MAGIC and HEALING MAGIC.
Our rules for maintaining a partnership are simple: be honest, be kind, and bring Diet Coke and chocolate.
They say Hind-sight is 20/20. If you could give advice to the writer you were the first time you sat down to write, what would it be?
Write every day. Write through the pain and disappointments. Write when you’re happy, when you’re excited, when you’d rather not write. Make it a priority in your life.
What was your most difficult scene to write?
While we were writing HEALING MAGIC, we both lost our husbands. Our main character Eva Grace has lost her true love, a man who’d been a part of her life since they were teenagers. Putting her grief on the page was difficult while we were each grappling with how to reach new normals. The scenes where she admits her attraction to another man were especially hard to imagine, much less write.
Are themes a big part of your stories, or not so much?
Yes, we focus on magic, good vs. evil, and secrets and lies that complicate lives.
What are you working on now?
We may revisit New Mourne in the future, but we’ve turned our attention to dragons and an urban Atlanta setting.
Is there a release date planned?
2022
Who is your favorite character from your own stories, and why?
Brenna Burns from AWAKENING MAGIC. She’s independent, restless and eager to make her own way. However, when she leaves home, she feels her family coven and its comfort drawing her back to New Mourne.
Most writers were readers as children. What was your favorite book in grade school?
Neely - The book, Nellie Bly, that I read in elementary school was the reason I became a reporter.
Powell - Any Nancy Drew mystery. I became completely absorbed in her world. I read and reread every book.
What are your plans for future projects?
To continue writing paranormal romance novels.
Is there anything you would like to add before we finish?
We’d like to connect with our readers on a more consistent and direct level.
Good luck with Healing Magic, and thank you for being with us today.
Excerpt
A deep rumble moved through the air. Laughter, Rodric realized. The demon was laughing.
“Damn you!” Rodric yelled. “You’re a coward controlled by your mistress.”
As thunder boomed, the water shot up and Eva Grace was level with Rodric. Treasures the faeries had given her gleamed at her throat, and the demon made the earth shake.
“Give those to me,” the creature roared.
The demon couldn’t just take them, she’d have to give them to him. Which meant Rodric could save her. But how?
“Help me,” he called to his ancestors. “Help us!”
A thick rope appeared in his hands. He made a loop and threw it with all his strength toward her. She fought to get the loop over her head, but the effort cost her.
The demon roared at Rodric. “Tell her to save herself. Give me what I need.”
“She’s not giving you anything,” Rodric shouted.
“Maybe to save you.” A lightning bolt struck just feet from Rodric.
Summoning all the magic in his blood, Rodric slowly began to pull Eva Grace up from the river.
