Plotter? OR Pantser?

Most authors fall into one of two categories when it comes to writing a book: Plotter or Pantser (flying by the seat of your pants). I am a little bit of both, in what I tend to call a Plantser. I have a rough idea of the story I want to tell when I begin writing each book, as well as the overall running arc through the series, but discovering every single plot point nugget is part of the fun as I dive right in.

And in To Catch A Rogue, the fourth book in my London Steampunk: The Blue Blood Conspiracy series, I knew exactly what I wanted to pull off.

I love old movies (like To Catch A Thief and Ocean's Eleven, which I watched with my grandmother years ago), and I have a secret addiction to spies and adventure in literature or on the screen, so writing this series is like blending all of my loves into one big mash-up.

To Catch A Rogue is my chance to delve into the thief/heist plotline (with a steampunk twist, of course), and boy was it fun to write.

I've been writing the London Steampunk series for seven years now, so I know this world inside and out. It's a dark world full of glittering ballrooms, foggy rookery streets, vampires stalking their prey from the shadows, and powerful steam-driven automatons that patrol the streets.

In my world, the male aristocrats of England (and many other European countries) infected themselves with the craving virus (which makes them stronger, faster, impervious to sickness etc. but brings with it the blood craving), so there's a little bit of a twist on the vampire mythos and the English ton. The blue bloods are not vampires, but evolving into them, and vampires are ravaging, bloodthirsty creatures who have lost all rational concepts.

In the Blue Blood Conspiracy series, a mysterious organization plots to overthrow the queen.

To combat this mysterious threat, the Duke of Malloryn puts together a highly-skilled team of individuals who call themselves the Company of Rogues—thieves, assassins, spies and bounty hunters—but he knows the threat is personal. His old nemesis is back in play, and the Company of Rogues is facing a dangerous task when one of their own is kidnapped.

All signs point to Russia; to rescue their companion, they're going to have to infiltrate the vicious Crimson Court, find their friend, and plot the rescue of the century in plain sight.

My hero, Charlie Todd, knows he needs the best thief in the rookeries to help him pull off this rescue, so he turns to his onetime dearest friend, Lark. Of course, they have a bit of a history, and Lark has a few secrets up her sleeve, so... all does not go according to plan, but that's part of the fun.

A bit like being a plantser—nothing is ever quite the way you plan it, but by the time you finish writing the book, you've had a glorious time doing it.
