Evoke
by Danielle Simmons

Genre: YA/NA Romance
Release Date: November 2018

When five friends come home from college for the summer, it feels as if the friendship that has bound them together since childhood, is stronger than ever. But when Laney Thomas wakes up two months later and discovers she is the sole survivor of an accident that has claimed the lives of three friends, Laney realizes the world she has awakened, is not the one she remembers. The loss is devastating, changing her life irrevocably, and with no recollection of the accident or the days leading up to it, Laney must rely on Evan Davies, the only one not in the car that night, to help her heal. The two have always been close, sharing a rare and inextricable bond, and as long as he is by her side, the emptiness won’t swallow her whole. But when Evan disappears from her life without explanation, Laney is forced into her memories of the past, learning the painful truth of the friendships she cherished, and love coveted.

A Brandy's Book Nook Review
⭐⭐⭐⭐

This book is a mix of different things that kept me wondering exactly what genre you could call it. Even now a couple of days after finishing it, I am trying to find a way to describe it. It has some mystery to it, but it's not a typical mystery. There is a love interest but it's not exactly a romance either.

Laney is in a horrible car accident and can't remember the accident or the week leading up to it. Three out of four of her best friends died in the accident, and she struggles to cope as she was also in a coma for a couple of months and everyone else has had time to deal with what has happened. The story is really about how your friendships affect your life and the choices you make. As well as the people around you, even in a broad sense the people you don’t even think about in your community.

Evan, her last close friend, is acting different and won't tell her why which leads to her accepting a questionable friendship, and acting a little crazy in trying to cope with her grief and loss. Laney’s mom tries to protect her, but won’t answer her questions. As her memories start to return some truths that she wouldn't face before the accident about her best friend start to become painfully clear.

The story is interesting and powerful, but for me fell just shy of edge of your seat, what's going to happen next?! type of interesting. I am hopeful that this being the first in a series is just setting the stage for the OMG I can't believe that just happened moments that could be just around the corner. The series has great potential especially with the ending, and the new people coming into Laney’s life.
