My writing journey is different from many—a copy of others.

To explain, I believe in many instances destiny chooses the individual rather than the reverse order. Yes, the person who loves music becomes a pianist and one who loves the stars becomes an astronomer. For many of us, it is a different story. A story predicated on economics. A man decides to become a plumber rather than follow his dream of teaching children. A woman pursues a career in the business world rather than her love of painting.

I began to write poetry when I was in high school. Years later an agent offered me a book limited to my poems. I was too busy working with my father. When he died, I began a career in public office and government service. Still, the dream to write would not leave me.

I wrote a short story during that period on the pioneers traveling west. I became fascinated with writing and research.

I was hooked. There wasn’t any hope of recovery.

After retirement, I discounted my dream of writing a novel. I lacked the talent. Years later, I’ve written five novels and am writing two more. I confess to having a minor talent. One that has received recognition from my peers and modest sales for an “indie.”

I am disabled and cannot travel. The challenge is never fun but it is life and one must accept. I support my fellow writers with notes of encouragement and share their talents on social media. They are my internet friends rather than competition.

My creative efforts are a bit different from many authors. I write only one draft and edit my work before shipping it out to an editor. There are occasions when I relocate scenes in the story. I am not formally trained in writing, so grammar rules will remain a challenge for me.

I’ve been asked on where and how I come up with my stories. I wish I knew the answer as well. At any time or any place, the idea explodes in my head. For example, I witnessed a well-dressed attractive mother with two toddlers at a Safeway checkout counter. She appeared embarrassed paying for her items with food stamps. Oh, there is a story there. A fabulous story that demands publication. One that I intend to write when I clear my desk.

What is it like to be a writer alone behind a closed door in an imaginary world that races through his or her mind?

Awesome.
