Fake News: fact, fiction and truth

We hear the term fake news a lot these days, directed from each side of the political spectrum at the news reporters they perceive as representing the other side, accusing them of telling lies rather than the real truth. The more that term—fake news—is bandied about, the less readers and viewers believe they can trust the information they get unless they hand-pick the source. This paranoia about trust-worthiness of course benefits the people who want the most freedom to control what readers think. Yet the paranoia is sometimes justified.

But this phenomenon did not begin in the current century. As long as there have been writers and readers, they have asked: What are the facts? What is fiction? What is true?

This topic plays a big role in the Jane Benjamin Trilogy, especially in Tomboy, book two, which is set in 1939, on the brink of World War II.

Jane herself feels self-doubt because she is aiming at achieving a gossip column, as it is one of the few well-paying ways for a woman in that time to make money in journalism. Jane is ambitious, so that’s what she wants.

But in the course of the novel, she begins to feel on a personal level what it means to a celebrity to be gossiped about, to have her private affairs aired around the world, to be pushed for honest, authentic emotions about the private tragedies of life. Jane attempts to get a scoop about celebrity, world-class tennis player and cover girl, Tommie O’Rourke, but has to face her own feelings about the effect on Tommie of her airing such a scoop.

Jane is a gossip columnist who must develop scruples about what to do when she discovers cruel facts that may not shed a lot of light on the truth.

This is a topic that never gets old to me. And the troubles will keep coming in book three, Flyboy (November 2023).

Book Description:

It’s 1939. Jane Benjamon’s got five days at sea to solve the murder of a Wimbledon champion’s coach and submit a gossip column that tells the truth. If not the facts.

On the brink of World War II, Jane wants to have it all. By day she hustles as a scruffy, tomboy cub reporter. By night she secretly struggles to raise her toddler sister, Elsie, and protect her from their mother.

But Jane’s got a plan: she’ll become the San Francisco Prospect’s first gossip columnist and make enough money to care for Elsie.

Jane finagles her way to the women’s championship at Wimbledon, starring her hometown’s tennis phenom and cover girl Tommie O’Rourke. Jane plans to write her first column there. But then she witnesses Edith “Coach” Carlson, Tommie’s closest companion, drop dead in the stands of apparent heart attack, and her plan is blown.

Sailing home on the RMS Queen Mary, Jane veers between competing instincts: Should she write a social bombshell column, personally damaging her new friend Tommie’s persona and career? Or should she work to uncover the truth of Coach’s death and its connection to a larger conspiracy involving US participation in the coming war?

Putting away her menswear and donning first-class ballgowns, Jane discovers what upper-class status hides, protects, and destroys. Ultimately—like nations around the globe in 1939—she must choose what she’ll give up in order to do what’s right.
