Synopsis:
Sixteen-year-old Bella Kynaston has been the victim of a brutal rape, by someone she can only describe as ‘the scar-faced man.’ With little recollection of what happened, she must somehow rebuild her life. Being the person she once was proves more difficult than she imagined.

To complicate matters, Bella has just met Jeremiah Detrone, the new guy in school. He’s attractive, funny, and smart. All things she’s ever wanted in a boyfriend. Too bad she’s conflicted over so many unexpected emotions. Without realizing it, she falls down a rabbit hole and begins walking a dangerous line between addiction and self-preservation.

As Bella works together with the police to bring her attackers to justice, will she be able to see it through to the end? And even if she does, will it only bring her more pain and misery? Or will she find an anchor in Jeremiah and figure out how to move forward?

My Review

⭐⭐⭐⭐

I went into this book thinking it was one of those stories where the Author crosses the line, so they have to call it new-adult, but it's not. Because of the nature of the violence and progression, I don't recommend this for YA, unless you have a very mature teenager. The Author give's warning in the beginning of the book, that if you have any problems with sexual violence, this book isn't for you. I appreciated that, because I have a friend that has problems because of experiencing these issues, and books can really upset her if she goes into it without warning.

Having said that, I wonder at the message the Author is delivering. Date rape is real, and there are some real predators out there, and teenagers can fall prey to them if they aren't careful. This is a fatal attraction story, and it carries that kind of tension. It unfolds beautifully, and follows the progression of how a girl/woman handles a situation like rape. It isn't an attack that my heal soon, but a festering wound these women can't allow others to touch. This makes it hard to heal, and often places the victim in danger.

Where the new boy she's met comes in, I felt like the progression of their story was a little too easy. I'm thinking the character would have been angrier. Things get even harder for Bella because her attacker is not caught, and she doesn't know who she can trust. This is a lot to throw on a sixteen-year-old's plate. I would have given the book 5 stars, but it doesn't have a solid ending. You have to wait for another book. This is the kind of book I expect to have a solid end, due to incidents and intensity, however, I have since learned that book two will not be far behind.
