Hi everyone, sorry I've been a little MIA. I've been working crazy hours, but I still managed to squeeze in a little time to read a new book. This goes along with a read along on Facebook that I joined.

In Broken World we meet Vivian. There is a dangerous virus running around on the east coast, so the government has put the U.S. on lock down. You can't travel without just cause, and you need government papers to prove it. Vivian has decided that if it's the end of the world she wants to spend her remaining time with the daughter she gave up for adoption.

Travel is dangerous, and people are getting desperate. When her car breaks down she meets brothers Angus and Axl. After that things go from bad to worse, and it's a fight to stay alive. There is a little frustration with Vivian, but she's never been a mom and she's trying her best.

They pick up a handful of other survivors as they go, and do their best to find a place to stay. No one knows how the virus works, and sometimes it's the living you have to worry about.

The character development is pretty good. You think the brothers are just a couple of rednecks, but as the story unfolds you learn there is more to them than you think. There is a depth to them that you would never have guessed at first. I really hope that this continues with the rest of the characters as the series goes on.

I gave this story five stars because of a couple of things. One the way the story unfolds. It's realistic, and unusual in that the dead don't immediately turn into zombies. It takes a couple of days after death, which leads to confusion and disbelief. Two I connected with the characters. Their stories drew me in, and there is one scene with a death that I really had to work not to tear up at lunch in front of my co-workers. Lastly, the character development. The author allows you to make assumptions, and then slowly shows you the real person underneath.

At the time of this post the book is free on amazon at the following link:

If you would like to join the FB group we just started the second book yesterday. The author is really active and we've had some good discussions about the characters. You can find the page here:
