An Interview with Kailin Gow
Tell us a little bit about why you write in your chosen genre, and if you have books in other genres as well.
I write fantasy such as PULSE Vampires because it was the first genre I wrote in back in 2001 when I published my first book series for girls age 9 and up for girls about angels after 9/11. I wanted to write about the subject of supernatural beings back then, which compelled me into the fantasy genre. Because I was writing for tweens and then teens, it started me into the Middle Grade and then the Teen/YA genre. I continued writing in the fantasy MG/YA genre to this day and have written about fairies (Bitter Frost Series, Wordwick Games Series, Steampunk Scarlett Series), shifters (Bitter Frost Series, Wicked Woods Series), ghosts (Phantom Diaries Series), gods and goddesses (Fire Wars Series), elves (Wicked Woods Series), demon hunters and angels (Beautiful Beings Series), incubus (Beautiful Beings Series), dragons (Bitter Frost Series, Wicked Woods Series, Wordwick Games Series), unicorns (Bitter Frost Series), superhumans (FADE Series), djinns (Desire Series), Alchemists (Alchemists Academy Series), mermaids (Fire Wars Series), and of course vampires (PULSE Vampires Series, Wicked Woods Series, Steampunk Scarlett Series).
I also write Middle Grade/Younger Teen Series such as the upcoming Amazon Lee Adventures Series, The Super Supers Series.
Contemporary Romance for New Adult/College - Loving Summer Series, Never Knights Trilogy, You & Me Series.

What was the title of your first book, and what was/is it about?Lucy and the Liberty Quilt (A Gifted Girls Book) by Victoria London (my first pen name) was written and published in 2001, and was a fantasy paranormal MA/younger Teen Series that took place during September 11, 2001. It was about a girl whose parents were in a flight to New York when the 9/11 tragedy happen and how it affected her, her neighborhood, and school. She meets a mysterious woman who helps her discover her latent powers which she uses to help her community, family, and friends to cope with the events of September 11.
Was it a series?
Yes, it was, and it featured 5 different girls from different time periods in history who were called Gifted Girls who were agents of angels who had to step up to help people during times of disasters and tragedies in history. This series was recommended by the US Mental Health Association and also PBS Kids and became an international bestseller at its time.
The first book seems to be the most difficult to get off the ground. What inspired you to write it? When September 11 happened, I always felt I had to write one book before the “end of the world” and it should make a difference. I wrote Lucy and the Liberty Quilt in a week and published it within a month of September 11, and donated parts of the proceeds from the sale of the book to the American Red Cross at the time. I was a volunteer CPR instructor and first responder at the time for them as well so it was something I felt compelled to do. It started with one book, which propelled me into a full-time career as an author when the book series and my other series took off.
What is your most current book?
The Amazon Lee Adventures Series is my newest book series written under my name. It is a collaboration between myself and my daughter.
The first book is titled, Amazon Lee and the Ancient Undead of Rome. It’s about a 15-year-old girl named Amazon (“Ama” for short) who thought she was going to have a relaxing vacation in Rome this summer with her parents, Scientist Dr. Stephen Lee, his wife, Historian Dr. Sandra Lopez, and her father's eccentric younger sister and inventor Dr. Annabelle Lee. What she didn't expect was that she and her family would soon make the discovery that the Ancient people of Rome would soon rise again....as the Undead. The clock is ticking as Amazon Lee and her family must work together using science, technology, and history to discover why the dead were rising as the Undead in Rome, before it is too late.
Amazon Lee is a strong, independent girl with High-Functioning Autism, but you would never know it.
This is a STEM, ELA Literary, and Social Science Curriculum Adventure Series for Middle Grade, Teens, and Up.
Is it a series?
Yes, there are so far 3 books in the series planned and with release dates. Amazon Lee and the Ancient Undead of Rome (Releases May 15, 2018), Amazon Lee and the Ancient Undead of Greece (Releases September 2018), and Amazon Lee and the Ancient Undead of Egypt (Releases January 2019).
New books are so exciting. Do you have more stories planned or that you’ve been working on for the future?
The Amazon Lee Adventures Series will continue. I have a standalone coming for the steamy adult series, The Master Chefs Series. Also, under my pen names D.R. Love and Sunny Winters, I have at least 25 more books planned. Under non-fiction, I have The Perfect Cup: Coffee planned for release Fall 2018. And a Series of Philosophy Books called STRONG. And a lot more! I will have the schedule on my website, KailinGow.com, and also announce new releases through my newsletter.
Can you share a little bit about your main character’s, and what drives them?
In PULSE Vampire Series, Kalina Calloway is a special girl with a secret that she didn’t know about but discovers when her ex-boyfriend dies, and two of his half-brothers show up in town to find out what happens. Thus begins her journey into finding out an incredible, amazing, yet horrifying truth about herself and the world she thought she knew, but didn’t. Kalina, like all my heroines, are driven by an innate drive to do what is right, to be heroic. They can’t just sit around and let things happen, they are doers and leaders. They are young women on the verge of discovering their true strengths and potential.
Some stories have strong themes. How important are themes in your writing? Is your theme based on the story, or are your stories birthed from a theme/or themes?
Themes are very important in my writing. I don’t follow a formula when writing, but I do have a strong sense of story and writing. I often have the theme of good vs. evil in my books for younger readers (MA/younger YA), but also more complex themes of the struggle within, humans vs. nature, humans vs. society. But because I have so many books and series, the themes for each series and even for each individual book can vary depending on the plot and structure of the story.
If the answer was yes, is the theme personal for you, or simply an important issue?
The theme is always personal for me and important as each book I write should be meaningful enough for me to take the time, expense, and opportunity costs to write it :D
What other stories have you written?
Many! Take a look at kailingow.com to see the many series I’ve written. Also, I’ve talked about some of the series I’ve written before up above :D?
I love to bounce around websites because I’ve found I can learn so much about an Author there. Do you have a website, blog, or other place where you showcase your work?
Yes! My website is http://www.kailingow.com.
So many Authors are artists by nature. Do you have any other artwork or hobbies you do on a consistent basis?
I’m also a full-time filmmaker and producer. In the last 2 years, I’ve come out with 3 TV Series and Several films which have fortunately won 17 Awards and 22 Nominations from Film Festivals in the U.S. and internationally. Some of these films and shows would be airing on streaming channels, cable tv, and in the theater at the end of 2018 and in 2019. PULSE Vampires Series is the first book series that have been adapted into a feature film and is in production. The theatrical release date of the film called Mysterious Teacher is set for late 2018. The Bitter Frost Series Film is also currently in production with a theatrical release for 2019. Loving Summer is also in production for a release date of 2019.
What were your passions growing up?
I’ve had several passions growing up :D Reading, writing, acting, directing, and traveling.
What are your passions now?
I still have the same passions as I had growing up. Reading, writing, acting, directing, traveling, and now speaking, family, and social causes, philanthropy.

My pleasure! Thank you for having me :D
