What’s your talent?

In a world divided between those who are talented and those who aren’t, Vici is a city governed by an egotistical Praetor driven by his hatred for the gifted individuals—the Tallents—who he considers a plague. Tallents are forced into the shadows, for fear that they will be caught and executed.

An explosion rocks the city to its very foundation; the sole survivor a young woman with no memories of her past. Her only tie to her previous life is a silver necklace with the name Asylia inscribed. Risen from the ashes, she pieces herself together while taking control of her emerging fire talent. She must be careful; one mistake and she will end up like all the other Tallents who have faced the Praetor’s wrath.

Harbored by a mysterious group called Revival, the young woman discovers that the people of Vici are disappearing at an alarming rate. Together with her new friends, she must rally against the Praetor’s tyranny, racing to free the city in hopes that she isn’t too late to bring peace to this world in turmoil.

An Interview with A.J. Wharton

Welcome to JB’s Bookworms with Brandy Mulder

Tell us about your newest book.
The story is set in a Hellenistic world, where people who have exhibited supernatural abilities are known as tallents. The world is divided between those who are talented and those who aren’t. The talented are forced into the shadows, for fear of discovery and inevitable execution. There is an explosion that rocks the city to its very foundation. The only survivor of the explosion, Asylia wakes up with no memories of her past life. But soon starts exhibiting a surprising amount of power. She soon meets several people that have abilities comparable to her own in a group called Revival. Together they fight for the cities freedom from the Praetor as they search for clues to Asylia’s mysterious past.

Writing isn’t easy. What was the most difficult thing you dealt with when writing your newest book?
I had a lot of difficulty keeping track of characters, their details and their nuances. In my very first draft of my book I didn’t realize I had a single character missing for several chapters.

Tell us a little bit about your writing career.
This is my first published book, though I am going to make it into a series at least 7 books long.

They say Hind-sight is 20/20. If you could give advice to the writer you were the first time you sat down to write, what would it be?
Write whenever you can, even if you don’t think it’s an important idea write it down! Everything adds up.

What was your most difficult scene to write?
There is a scene about half way through the book that has some sexual violence in it. It was tough to get through, and I tried to keep it short, but I really wanted the reader to understand what the character is capable of.

Are themes a big part of your stories, or not so much?
Not so much. I try to take a new approach on everything that I do.

What are you working on now?
Currently I am working on a Prequel as well as a sequel.

The prequel is going to be from the character Junia’s point of view and will take place a long time before the 1st book. It will focus on the relationship she has with her sister and the events leading up to the Rebirth.

The sequel of Rebirth will take place 3-4 weeks after the events in the end of the book. It will focus on the balance between Asylia and Azria. The working title right now is Resonance

Is there a release date planned?
I plan to release both of them by February 2019. But I will keep everyone informed if it is any sooner.

Who is your favorite character from your own stories, and why?
Asylia for sure, her naivety, thoughtfulness, and raw power makes for an interesting character to write.

Most writers were readers as children. What was your favorite book in grade school?
The main books I can remember reading were Garfield comics. In terms of other books, I’d say I read the series of unfortunate events pretty often as well.

What are your plans for future projects?
I’m planning on writing at least 7 books for the series. It’s a vast world with tons of possibilities. Though my main goal when I started to write was to make an audio book. I wanted to wait at least a few months past its initial release date to start on production, but I want to start on it in June or July of this year (2018)

Is there anything you would like to add before we finish?
Just that I hope everyone enjoys the book!

Good luck with your newest release, and thank you for being with us today.

Excerpt

A rustling chain nearby; my body feels weak and heavy as the darkness surrounds me. Cold numbness fills my body. The razor-sharp wind cascades past my face. A shattering noise wakes me up to the icy wind whipping across my body. The current turns me over and over as if I’m a mere plaything for the air around me. My eyes spring open and struggle against the oncoming current. I am high in the air above the city. Beneath me, bright lights of buildings stretch as far as I can see. I panic as I fall faster and faster toward the ground.

“Aaaaaaahhhhhh!”

A bright light emanates from behind me and lights up the night sky as the pulse of power fuels an explosion above me. I twist and turn as I rocket toward the ground. Something is attached to me and squirming to get out of my reach. Got to hold on; got to hold on just a little longer. A black, crumpled mass tears from my body, its claws ripping at my flesh as it disappears above me. My body rocks from it, picking up pace as my arms flail around, helpless against the downward pull of gravity. Beneath me, I recognize the building as the one they had shown when Praetor Fraus delivered his announcement. It isn’t how I remembered seeing it though. When I last saw it, it was charred and broken, but this building looks pristine. The city fills my vision as I soar closer and closer. Brilliant glistening buildings formed almost a perfect circle: the edge of the city outlined by crystalline magenta walls.

A mangled voice comes from behind me, but the wind makes it hard to make out what it is saying. I see through the glass ceiling of the building and I try to change my path, but I burst through the glass as fire surrounds me.
