Five Books That Rocked My World
By Lisa Shumate
Author of “Always and Never: 20 Truths for a Happy Heart”
Nonfiction has always been my cup of tea. I yearn for the knowledge steeped in perspective and perfectly brewed takeaways to challenge the status quo. Today I share with you my top five nonfiction cuppas, why they satisfy my cravings, and why they will always be top shelf in my reading pantry.
#5 -- The Seven Habits of Highly Successful People
Written by Stephen Covey, this book birthed a movement of time management and clear strategies for being effective in life and career. For example, Covey teaches how being proactive puts control back in your life. And when faced with a big project and challenge, the mantra “begin with the end in mind” helps light the way to developing plans to achieving goals.
#4 -- Blue Ocean Strategy: How to Create Uncontested Market Space and Make the Competition Irrelevant
As authors W. Chan Kim and Renee Mauborgne lay out in this international bestseller, the secret to success is not battling competitors but is in creating “blue oceans” of uncontested market space.
The opportunity for managers is to see the blue ocean opportunity by focusing on the big picture and seeing beyond existing demand. The book highlights six principles that organizations can use to chart a bold path to winning the future.
#3 -- Chicken Soup for the Soul
Motivational speakers Jack Canfield and Mark Victor Hansen launched an empire by sharing inspirational, true stories about ordinary people's lives. The story of how the title came to be explains the series’ enduring, phenomenal success. Jack recalled the image of his grandmother’s chicken soup and how she told him it would cure anything. His vision for the book was that it would have the same healing powers as that soup, but for the soul. From there, Chicken Soup for the Soul was born.
#2 -- How Women Rise: Break the 12 Habits Holding You Back from Your Next Raise, Promotion, or Job
#1 -- Big Magic: Creative Living beyond Fear
She’s one of the most successful writers of our time, and in this book she champions the creative among us. With sharp wit and her personal revelations, Elizabeth Gilbert, worldwide bestselling author of Eat Pray Love, shares her unique perspective about creativity.
She discusses the attitudes, approaches, and habits we need in order to live our most creative lives, shattering the image of the starving artist, tortured artist, and self-destructive artist. Suffer no more! Be talented AND be happy. Not a how-to, but a why not?! Gilbert makes a compelling call to courage that will inspire authors, painters, dancers, and creatives of all types to stare down momentum-killing FEAR and pursue their unique gifts.
So there you have it—my top five books and why I love them. In fact, writing this piece has ignited my affection all over again and I’m imagining a good cup of tea, a quiet afternoon, and thumbing through them all over again.
