An Interview with the Author

LAURA MAYBROOKE

Immortal Defiance

What made you decide you wanted to write?
I started writing in my teenage years, about 25 years ago. A friend of mine had been writing then for some time, and she was stuck in a part in her story, and she asked for my help. I read her work, penned a way out of her writer’s block for her, and from then on, I have been an eager writer.

What inspired your first story?
A role-playing game from the SNES era. Secret of Mana, to be precise. Playing it with my friend was an awesome adventure, and I wanted to start an adventure of my own.

Tell us about your book.
Immortal Defiance is a story of friendship, love, valor, and courage against the backdrop of a freedom war, set in a medieval-like world. It is a slow-burn paranormal fantasy romance, where the lines blur between heroes and villains, and where things are far from what they seem.

Dulcea and Krath’s story is a story of overcoming conflict. On the surface, these two people, an elven lady and a vampire, are as dissimilar as can be, but they may yet discover that differences are often only skin deep.

Do you have any quirky or hard-headed characters?
I believe the character of the mercenary leader Haden fits the bill on both of these characters traits. Read to see why!

If you were a character or creature in one of your stories, what would you be with your personality, and why?
I am a lady in the desert, on a river island, waiting for travelers to quiz. I embody the spirit of Destiny and reward wise travelers with a safe passage to their destination.

… And yes, that’s both true and not. She’s Lady D, my previous online persona in the art world, and no, she does not exist in the actual story. But she’s still a part of that world’s myth in my mind.

If you could disappear into any fantasy world you’ve read, (aside from your own), which would it be?
Yeah, I’m going to be predictable, but I will say Middle Earth. It’s got everything I could want of a fantasy world; thrill and danger, awesome characters to call friends, and incredibly rich history.

If you were a fantasy creature, what would you want to be?
A dragon. No questions about that. I love dragons; that’s the reason they also feature in my stories.

I love bouncing around with alternative choices, so …
Angel or demon?

Fairy or Witch?

Land or air?

Is there anything you’ve really wanted to do that you’ve never done?
Yes. See the world outside Europe. However, I dislike flying, so the longest you can get me to sit on an airplane is 3 to 4 hours. I live in northern Europe, so luckily 3 – 4 hours takes me almost anywhere in Europe.

Are there any books planned for the future that we can look forward too?
Yes. Immortal Defiance is part of a trilogy, the first book. Books 2 and 3 have already been written, and they are currently in the editing stage. My goal is to have both books out in 2020.

Blog?
On the site above.

Facebook or Twitter?
Both, but I am not active on Facebook yet. Twitter, however, is my home away from home; meaning I am active there. Come say hi to me at: https://twitter.com/LMaybrooke

I post a lot of my artwork on twitter, related to Immortal Defiance and its sequels.

How about an Amazon page?

Is there anything you want to add before calling it a day?
As mentioned in the part about my twitter page, I have also long been an artist, and some of my artwork can also be viewed at: https://www.deviantart.com/lauramaybrooke.

I do a lot of art related to scenes in Immortal Defiance, and would like to treat your readers to one of my pictures, featuring a scene from early on in the book where Dulcea, saved from her execution, meets her savior… only to discover that not all heroes are good… or even alive.

It was great having you, Laura. Thanks for joining us today.
Thank you for hosting me. And for anyone who’s on Kindle Unlimited, remember Immortal Defiance can be read on KU.

Author Bio:

“I live in my own little world. But it’s ok, they know me here.” (Who besides me has this fridge magnet; raise your hand!)

That’s sometimes what it feels like. Who says stories aren’t real? I live in the land of the Midnight Sun and Polar Nights, together with my husband and daughter, and a cast of fantasy characters running around in my head. It’s busy here. Care to stay and chat a while?

Laura Maybrooke is an 80s’ child, who works too much and writes too little, but who’ll never say no to a thrilling romance, a high fantasy adventure, or a cookbook full of delicious treats she’d like to bake one day.
