Book Description:
In this humorously touching novel by the critically acclaimed author of Degrees of Love, a woman is blindsided when her high school sweetheart abandons her after eighteen years of marriage.
At sixteen, Kimberly Kirby thought the only thing she needed to be perfectly happy was to spend the rest of her life with Jay Braxton. Twenty years later, she still believes it. As they proudly watch their daughter, Haley, graduate from high school, she imagines her life is as perfect as anyone could reasonably expect. Jay is a formidable attorney, she a freelance writer, and their love as strong as ever. With Haley heading to UC Berkeley in the fall, Kimberly fantasizes about making love on the kitchen table. She has no clue that Jay’s bags are already packed.
Now divorced and determined to squelch her love for Jay, she accepts a gig writing a sex and dating blog for divorcees. As the Virgin Dater, she is on the hunt for love. No-strings-attached nights with a sexy fireman and moving to San Francisco are just what she needs to boost her battered ego and mend her shattered heart.
But just as she falls hard for a talented young chef, Jay fights to win her back. Torn between her bold new life and the comfort of Jay’s strong arms, she questions if there is too much to forgive. The ten thousand I love yous that had passed Jay’s lips can’t be dismissed, but nor can her newfound freedom and the knowledge that her happiness doesn’t depend on Jay.

The Day I Fell In Love
I
was sixteen, and we were a week into summer break when a group of friends and I
organized a party at Stinson Beach. I’d noticed that Val Sturgis had started
hanging out with Kimberly Kirby so I made a point of inviting Val, hoping she
would bring Kimberly. I’d nursed a crush on Kim since the seventh grade. She
never seemed to notice me, but the last day of Trigonometry class, she had smiled
at me. Her cheeks had turned red before she turned away. I hoped it meant that
I finally had a chance with her.
I
remember I was in the water when Val and Kim walked onto the beach and started
unpeeling their clothes. I decided to go for it before I lost my nerve.
“Hey, Val,
who’s your friend?” I asked, trying to play it cool.
“You
know Kimberly,” she answered.
Kim was bent over shoving clothes into a beach
bag, which gave me an incredible view of her butt. Wow—I never imagined how
good she would look in a bikini. She whipped around and looked up at me with a
shy smile.
“I didn’t
recognize you without your clothes,” I teased, making her blush. She shook her
head with a little laugh and my confidence surged. “Hey, wanna grab a beer with
me?”
She glanced at
Valerie.
Val elbowed her
and said, “Go.” I owed Val big time for that.
I grabbed a
couple of Buds from the cooler and handed one to Kim. There was something
different about her. “Did you do something to your hair?” I asked as we
strolled away from the crowd.
“Valerie
highlighted it for me. Did you really not recognize me?”
I laughed. I’m
glad she didn’t know many times I’d gotten to class early just so I could watch
her walk in. “Nah, I was just teasing. I was surprised to see you though. I
thought you spent your weekends working math puzzles and reading.”
She giggled. “I
like to have fun.”
“That’s good. I
hate to think you’re serious all the time. Hey, how come you won’t talk to me
in class? Afraid talking to a jock will
ruin your smart girl reputation?” Of
course, we were both in advanced classes, so I doubted she thought I was a
complete idiot.
“I’m talking to
you now,” she said, smiling confidently.
“Yeah, that’s
probably because none of your smart friends are watching.”
She teased
back, “True, I do have a reputation to maintain.”
It hit me what
was so different. “Hey, you got your braces off.”
“Oh, yeah. I
got them off a few days ago.”
I turned her to
face me. “Let me see. Smile again.”
She smiled and our eyes locked. Her
eyes were so blue and inviting that I couldn’t look away. I’m pretty sure my
heart stopped beating for a few seconds. She had to be the most beautiful girl
in the world. I swallowed, fighting the
urge to kiss her. “I’ve always thought you were pretty, but without your braces
and glasses you’re like … wow.”
For some reason
that made her crack up and I laughed, too. After that, she loosened up and
started talking. She was a lot funnier than I’d ever imagined. We grabbed a couple more beers and then out
of the blue she started shaking.
“Hey, Kimberly,
what’s wrong?”
“I’ve never
drunk beer before.” She hiccupped. “I don’t feel good and I’m dizzy.” A tear
slipped down her cheek.
Oh, shit. This
wasn’t good. I hoped she wouldn’t hate me later for getting her drunk. “Hey,
hey, don’t cry. Come on, I’ll take care of you.”
I found us a
spot to sit away from the crowd and put my arm around her. Her hair smelled like strawberries and her warm
body was incredibly soft against my chest. At some point she fell asleep, and
so did my arm, but there was no way I would move her. I could have sat there all day, breathing in
her strawberry scent and just holding her. When she woke up and pulled away, a
pain shot through my chest.
That was when I
knew I didn’t just like Kimberly Kirby. I had fallen in love with her.
