My novel, Off Broadway: A Marriage Drama, is about a couple, Cindy and Dave, who got married too young. Now, eight years later, they are struggling to keep their relationship together. Since there are no children involved, the reader might fairly ask, “Why?” The book doesn’t spell out the answer, but there are plenty of clues. For one, there is clearly a physical attraction. Also, Cindy and Dave have a lot in common. Finally, they are both living in a city, far from home, and need each other.

It turns out that Cindy and her friend Susan know friends from college who are already divorced. Susan and her husband, Phil, hope to keep their marriage together by joining the swinging scene. Phil is bored only having one sexual partner. But this is not the case with Cindy and Dave. They still enjoy marriage intimacy.

In the story, both Cindy and Dave enjoy physical activity including hiking and skating. They listen to the same music, like the same movies, and when it’s time to relax, they share a joint. Often, they go out together especially for beer and pizza! Clearly, the couple has plenty in common.

The novel makes it clear that Dave is a rootless character who ends up in the city by chance. Cindy is from the nearby state of New Jersey, however, her hometown of Princeton is about the farthest thing from New York City imaginable. The Big Apple is a notoriously hard place to make it in life. Is it any wonder that Cindy and Dave cling to each other?

If Cindy and Dave have all these reasons to stay together, what then is driving them apart? This is what Off Broadway seeks to explain. After many twists and turns in the plot, the answer to this question turns out to be a surprise. To say more would spoil it!

Meet the Author:

William is a retired business executive now living in South Carolina with his wife, Bettina. She teaches high school German while Bill is the soccer coach at a small college. Their three sons, Alex, Robert, and Gordon have all graduated from college and moved away to pursue careers. Now Bill and Bettina enjoy long walks with their dogs. When the weather permits, Bill commutes on his motorcycle. “It’s like taking a roller coaster to work!” he enthuses.
